Hundreds of Fundraisers Highlight Broken Campaign System

With voter anger high, Congress must respond
Washington, D.C.—The Campaign for Fair Elections responded to a Roll Call report this morning that House incumbents will hold at least 415 fundraisers in the month of September. That members of Congress have to spend so much time raising money shows we need to fix our broken political system, according to the Campaign for Fair Elections.
“Combined with the countless hours these members have to spend dialing for dollars or jetting off to fundraisers across the country, voters have to wonder whether members have any time left to do their job,” said David Donnelly, campaign manager for the Campaign for Fair Elections.
“Did anyone in Washington hear yesterday’s anti-establishment message?” asked Donnelly. “Congress must demonstrate with actions, not words, that they understand everyday Americans want an end to business-as-usual and they can do it by passing the Fair Elections Now Act.”
The Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 6116/H.R. 1826, S. 752) would put elections back in the hands of everyday Americans. With Fair Elections, candidates could run competitive campaigns for office by relying on small donations from people back home. Fair Elections costs taxpayers nothing. The legislation has the broad, bipartisan, and cross-caucus co-sponsorship of 165 U.S. House members and 25 U.S. Senators.
