“Millions of Americans are being mobilized this week to push the House for a vote on the Fair Elections Now Act as soon as they can get it on the floor,” said David Donnelly, campaign manager for the Campaign for Fair Elections. “Across the country, people are telling their members of Congress and House leadership that they want to take elections back from the special interests.”
Here’s what’s happening this week:
- New polling from battleground districts that will be released tomorrow shows that voters support Fair Elections by wide margins, and are three times more likely to vote against a candidate who opposes Fair Elections.
- Grassroots organizations are emailing millions of members asking them to call their member of Congress and Speaker Nancy Pelosi to urge for a floor vote on Fair Elections.
- The Campaign has launched television ads praising the five members of Congress that voted Fair Elections out of the Committee on House Administration last week and is continuing its campaign in Washington, DC, featuring actor Sam Waterston.
- Grassroots groups in these districts are holding events to praise these members, and lead sponsors, for their leadership.
On September 23rd, the Committee on House Administration passed the Fair Elections Now Act, landmark legislation that would put voters back in charge of our elections. With Fair Elections, candidates can run competitive campaigns for office by relying on small donations from back home.
The legislation has the broad, bipartisan, and cross-caucus support of 165 U.S. House members, including lead sponsors Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.), Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), and Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.). Before the committee vote, more than 170 state and national organizations representing tens of millions of Americans submitted letters in favor of the legislation.
